High Winds and Heavy Rain: 9 Things to Check for Roof Damage (and When to Call a Roofer)

Lightning strikes behind a suburban house with a dark roof, set against a purple sky and green trees, creating a dramatic scene.

When strong wind and heavy rain hit, roof damage isn’t always obvious, especially if the leak hasn’t started yet. The fastest way to avoid expensive interior damage is to spot the early warning signs and schedule a professional inspection if anything looks off.

If you’re in the Idea Roofing service area of Shelby County, including Helena, Pelham, Alabaster, Calera, Chelsea and surrounding areas,

and recent storms have you concerned, you can request a storm damage inspection here: STORM DAMAGE INSPECTION

1) Look for missing or lifted shingles

Wind can lift shingles just enough to break the seal. That weak spot often turns into a leak during the next downpour.

2) Check gutters and downspouts for granules

A sudden “sand-like” buildup can indicate shingles took a beating.

3) Scan flashing areas (chimneys, vents, skylights)

Many leaks start at penetrations and transitions, not the middle of the roof.

4) Watch for new water stains inside

Ceilings, wall corners, closet ceilings, and around fireplaces are common first signs.

5) Look in the attic (only if safe)

Use a flashlight to check for damp decking, wet insulation, or dark streaks.

6) Check for debris impact

Branches and wind-blown debris can puncture shingles or dent/loosen metal components.

7) Inspect fascia/soffit and gutter lines

If gutters are pulling away, water may be flowing behind them, causing rot and hidden damage.

8) Note any sudden drafts or whistling sounds

That can indicate a vent cap issue, loose flashing, or lifted material.

9) Don’t climb the roof

Wet shingles are slick. Document what you can from the ground and call a pro.

When you should call a roofer immediately

  • Active leaking or dripping

  • Missing shingles/flashing

  • Tree/limb impact

  • Any new interior staining

  • You’re unsure but storms are continuing
